Going nuclear

Hi there,

Here’s what we’re watching this week:

  1. AI drug discovery mega-rounds
  2. AI 100 winner Humanoid reaches unicorn status
  3. Fresh nuclear funding

Let’s get into it.

AI drug discovery companies scored Q2’s largest digital health deals.

Digital health deal activity fell 36% QoQ in Q2'26, its fewest quarterly deals in more than a decade.

Funding also declined, down 24% to $5.7B, as investors put more money into fewer, larger rounds centered on AI drug discovery, including the top 2 rounds this quarter:

  • Isomorphic Laboratories ($2.1B Series B, more than a third of digital health’s total quarterly funding)
  • Chai Discovery ($400M Series C at a $3.8B valuation)

Humanoid reaches unicorn status, confirming our AI 100 call.

Humanoid, a European wheeled humanoid developer, raised a $152M Series A round at a $1.35B valuation, joining 20+ other humanoid unicorns.

The round is the most recent to shine a spotlight on the broader humanoid robotics market, where industrial customers are increasingly writing equity checks alongside commercial deployments.

We named Humanoid to the AI 100 earlier this year, on the strength of its wheeled robot platform and early industrial partnerships.

Schaeffler and Bosch invested and are also customers. Bosch is serving as contract manufacturer, while Schaeffler committed to purchase thousands of wheeled units through 2032.

“We went from a handful of humanoid pilots in 2025 to the floodgates opening in 2026. Humanoid is the latest to raise a massive round after receiving industrial validation, but Europe still trails the US and China in humanoid startups by a lot. Whether Europe’s industrial automation heritage can help it catch up is the story I’m watching.”

But the round is about more than one deal. A customer writing an equity check alongside a pilot is a stronger signal of commercial traction than funding size alone, potentially reshaping which humanoid bets make it first to commercial scale.

AI power demand is turning small nuclear reactors into a big funding category.

Data centers are pushing power demand past what the grid can supply. Investors are betting on small modular reactors to meet the shortfall.

Antares Nuclear raised a $470M Series C this week to build small reactors for military bases, one of three DOE pilot winners turning a recent milestone into funding.

Other SMR developers are raising alongside it:

  • Valar Atomics is in talks to raise $1B at a $6B valuation after delivering power from its reactor to an NVIDIA AI chip cluster.
  • Blue Energy raised $380M, then landed a strategic investment from Constellation Energy, its first in an SMR company.
  • Aalo Atomics raised a $100M Series B for a reactor built for AI data centers.

Funding is on pace for $1.7B this year, the second highest total ever, following a record $2.4B in 2025. Most of these reactors are not expected to run at scale until the early 2030s.
